Parking Permits, Suspensions & Dispensations

Work out whether your move can rely on legal loading or whether reserving space will make the job safer and more reliable.

White removal van loaded with boxes and protected furniture outside a homeA moving van needs a legal stopping plan.Do not assume an empty bay will still be empty on moving morning.

Start with the exact street

Check the signs and bay markings outside both properties. A controlled parking zone does not automatically mean loading is prohibited, but individual bays, red routes, school restrictions and local suspensions can change what is allowed.

When a suspension is useful

A bay suspension reserves specified parking space for a period of time. It can be valuable on streets where normal bays are usually full, where the van needs to remain close to the entrance, or where a long carry would materially increase the job time.

When a dispensation may apply

Some councils use dispensations to allow specific vehicles to wait where normal restrictions would prevent it. The terminology and application process vary by borough, so always use the current council guidance.

Who should arrange it?The person responsible for the property is usually best placed to arrange a council suspension because the application needs the exact address, bay location and moving date.

How early should you check?

Do not leave this until the day before the move. Some councils need several working days or longer. If you are unsure, use our borough directory and check the current council process.

What to send us

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does every London move need a suspension?

No. Some moves can use lawful loading or private parking. The exact street and restriction determine what is needed.

Can Easy Removals arrange the suspension?

The customer is normally best placed to arrange property-specific council permissions. Send us the confirmation once booked.

What if no suspension is available?

Tell us the nearest legal stopping point and expected carrying distance so the move can be planned realistically.

Planning the space

How much kerbside space does a moving van really need?

The answer depends on the vehicle, loading direction and street layout. Reserving the exact minimum bay can still create a difficult loading angle.

Think about rear-door access

Most furniture is loaded through the rear doors, so the van needs space not only to park but to open the doors and create a safe carrying route. Cars parked tightly behind the vehicle can make an otherwise legal space impractical.

Check where the suspension signs will apply

A council suspension normally applies to specific bays or a defined section of road. Make sure the reserved space corresponds with the property entrance rather than simply being somewhere on the same street.

Allow for the van length

An LWB van and a Luton-style vehicle need more space than a car. If the council application asks for a number of bays or a length in metres, use the actual vehicle requirement rather than guessing from car-sized spaces.

Remember the delivery address

Customers often plan parking carefully at the collection property and forget the destination. Repeat the same check for both ends, particularly if the move crosses boroughs with different rules.

Keep the confirmation accessible

Save the council reference, dates and location details on your phone. If signs have not been installed as expected, contact the council rather than assuming the suspension is valid without them.

Do not reserve blindlyA suspension is most useful when it creates a practical loading position. Check the entrance, carrying route and van orientation before applying.
